India’s opening batsman Mayank Agarwal has been ruled out of the first of the five-Test series after getting hit on the helmet during the practice session on Wednesday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed. Agarwal was hit on the back of his head by a short ball bowled by Mohammed Siraj. Agarwal removed his helmet and sat on the ground after taking the hit as physio Nitin Patel rushed to his head.
The 30-year-old was taken off the field and BCCI medical team conducted a concussion test. As per BCCI, “he showed signs of concussion”. The right-handed batsman will remain under close medical observation.

In Agarwal’s absence, wicketkeeper-batsman KL Rahul is likely to replace him. Left-handed batsman Abhimanyu Easwaran is another option for Virat Kohli & Co. as they take on England in the Nottingham Test.
