Odisha: Two held with brown sugar worth Rs 1 crore in Bhadrak | Bhubaneswar News, the vie

BHUBANESWAR: Bhadrak police seized around 1 kg of brown sugar worth nearly Rs 1 crore and arrested two persons from Power Plant Chhak in Randia area on Wednesday. The seizure is significant as Bhadrak is the neighbouring district of Balasore, which is infamous for being the hub of brown sugar smuggling.
On October 22, the Bhadrak police had arrested three persons, including two women and seized around 316 grams of brown sugar from them. In the latest case, the accused—Srikant Pradhan (35) and Arjun Sethi (32)—were arrested with the narcotics substance during an enforcement of the motor vehicles (MV) rules against traffic violators.
Bhadrak SP, Charan Singh Meena said the accused procured the brown sugar from Jaleswar area of Balasore and planned to sell it in Bhadrak. The police are trying to identify their other gang members.
To ensure that the drug menace does not infiltrate into Bhadrak from the neighbouring Balasore, the Bhadrak police launched an anti-narcotic drive earlier this year. “We have been showing zero tolerance to drug abuse. Actions are being taken against the drug traffickers. We have registered 23 cases under the NDPS Act, arrested 54 persons and seized around 5.734 kg of brown sugar worth over Rs 5 crore so far this year. Besides, ganja weighing around 31 kg have been seized in the district so far,” SP, Meena said.
