CHENNAI: Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) officials on Wednesday destroyed more than 15 tonne of artificially ripened bananas in the warehouses of the Koyambedu fruit market in Chennai.
The city wing of the FSSAI said traders sprayed a chemical — ethephon — on the bananas and plantains to expedite the ripening process. “We seized several bottles of the illegal ripening agents from traders. We also destroyed the fruits that were ripened with these chemicals,” said designated officer (Chennai) Dr Satheesh Kumar P.
The officials inspected several fruit stalls after they received reports about the illegal practice. “When chemical is sprayed on the skin, it ripens and can be toxic if consumed,” he said. While naturally ripened bananas would have a green stem, artificially ripened fruits would have a yellow stem just like the skin of the fruit, he said.
